What is MOTS-c?
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded in mitochondrial DNA rather than in the cell nucleus. Its name stands for mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c. First described in 2015, it belongs to a small group called mitochondrial-derived peptides and is studied in laboratory research on cellular metabolism and mitochondrial signaling.

Where MOTS-c comes from
Most proteins are encoded by DNA in the cell nucleus. Mitochondria carry their own small genome, and MOTS-c is encoded by a short open reading frame inside its 12S ribosomal RNA gene. That makes it one of a handful of known mitochondrial-derived peptides, along with humanin and the SHLP peptides.
Sequence
MOTS-c is 16 amino acids long: Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg (MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR). A lab report confirms identity by checking the measured mass against the mass expected from this sequence.
How it is studied
Since the first paper in 2015, MOTS-c has been studied in cell and animal research on mitochondrial signaling, cellular stress and metabolism. It is not an approved drug. Torrey Labs sells it for laboratory research use only.
Common questions
What does MOTS-c stand for?
Mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c.
How long is the MOTS-c peptide?
16 amino acids: MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR.
Is MOTS-c an approved drug?
No. It is a research compound, sold by Torrey Labs for laboratory research use only.
What does MOTS-c do?
In published research, MOTS-c is studied as a signaling peptide: cell and animal studies look at how it relates to mitochondrial function, cellular stress responses and metabolism. Those are research questions, not established effects, and Torrey Labs makes no claim about what it does in people.
What is the difference between MOTS-c 10mg and 40mg?
Only the amount of peptide in the vial. A 10 mg and a 40 mg vial hold the same 16-amino-acid peptide; compare them by price per mg and by whether the lot has a lab report matching the label strength.
